Angela Chidgey
For the last twenty years, since my first visit to East Africa and every year since, I have been captivated by elephants.
Not only for their wisdom and intelligence over the centuries but as a painter the shapes they make against the landscape and the colour of their skin becomes in different habitats; murram red, yellow ochre, dusty pink and burnt siena, even indigo blue when they are wet. (I have never painted a grey elephant) and those tiny amber eyes with their long and untidy eyelashes that appear to know all and probably do.
Now I paint in the calm of the Sienese countryside. In a very small studio, snug in the winter but rather too hot in the summer, yet elephants (on canvas) stream out of this "shoebox" studio.
My last London Exhibition in November 2007 raised enough funds to buy eight satellite collars for the Amboseli Elephant Project. Consequently from all the work I sell, a percentage will go to this project.
